The person bowling is my grandfather Reg Henley.
He was born as Reginald Esau Henley on 18th October 1900 at 4 Armstrong St Swindon the son of William Tom Henley and Alice Louisa Eustace. He was baptised on 18th November 1900 at St Johns Parish Church. At the time of the 1901 Census the family were living at 52 Beatrice St Swindon at which time Reg attended Gorse Hill School. At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at 25 Station Road Swindon. He was a keen footballer and was a member of the Sanford St Congregation Football Team.He served his apprenticeship in the Great Western Railway as a Wheelwright during the period 18th January 1916 to 17th October 1921.Later He became a coach body maker.Apart from a period during the great strike and the 2nd World War at which time he was working on aircraft production he served 45 years in total in the Great Western Railway.I have his 45 years service wristwatch in my possession. He retired on 22nd May 1964
He married Edith Minnie Reynolds on 11th April 1925 at the Register Office Swindon and shared 343 Ferndale Road with his parent at which time my mother Joan Edith Henley was born on 18th March 1927.They moved to 16 Villet St and on 25th February 1931 they had another daughter Eileen May Henley. Both children were baptised on 5th April 1931 at All Saints Church Swindon. After another move to 32 Harcourt Road they finally settled at 74 Jennings St just before the start of the war in 1939.At first the property was rented and in late 1949 the owners decided they wished to sell the propety and gave Reg the first option. In December 1949 he took out a mortgage on the property where he remained for the rest of his life.He died on the 25th December 1978 at 74 Jennings St and he is buried at Whitworth Road Cemetery with his wife who pre-deceased him on 17th July 1976.During his time at 74 Jennings St Reg was a keen Skittles and Darts player and a member of Even Swindon Percy St and Rodbourne Road clubs eventually becoming a life member.
The first man sat down on the right was my uncle Den Hammond.
