A photo appeared in the adver of Jim Walkinshaw’Remember When’March 3rd.in a story about his granddaughter Carol Carr nee Moss presented a bouquet to the Queen in 1954. Herbert James, was known as ‘Jock’ , he came here from Glasgow and worked as a door to door credit drapery salesman. He was a very popular weekly caller, children would chat to him as he went from house to house collecting the few pence installments. When the war started he went into Plesseys on war work but became an Air Raid Warden leading E3 Division.
Pop Jarmen was Chief warden of E Sector which served our Area. When the War ended Jock organised events at the Recreation Centre in Faringdon Road, then the Beginnings of Rodbourne Community Centre in the Morris Street Conservative Hall. Sadly, he died at the end of 1954 age 54, but left todays Community Centre as a legacy, a sapling to grow into the Centre we have today…
I have submitted his name to be used as a street name on a building site at Moredon. to be named after local people who have been similarly involved with community work, such as a suffragette and prisoner of war relief worker, also Alfred Beaney who took photographs of us at play which is now part of a schools project. It would be nice to hear your memories of Jock to strengthen my nomination…. Jean Allen nee White
