Coombes Bros was an Isle of Wight charabanc firm – based in Shanklin, where this picture looks to be taken.
Thanks Peter for the information on Coombes Bros. We’ve been ages trying to find where they were based.
Gordon Shaw – Secretary
That certainly is Shanklin. The location is High Street, opposite Vernon Meadow and Chine Avenue, with the vehicle facing into the Old Village. Grange Road runs off behind the coach. (The building on the right is now The Rock Shop). Coombes Bros were based at North Road Garage and 6 Regent Street in Shanklin at that time.
The vehicle seen here is almost certainly a Lancia, sun saloon ‘No.8’, which I believe was registered DL 4763. It was new to Coombes Bros in July 1926.
Coombes Bros closed in 1949, selling to Shotters Ltd., a major family-run bus and coach business on the Island at that time.
Hi Terry Ive just replied via our email and added your comments under the photo itself. So grateful for the information
