Talk on Wiltshire’s White Horses
June 28, 2023 @ 19:00 - 20:00
£2If you think you knew all about Wiltshire’s Chalk White Horses or you haven’t a clue let Garry Gibbons the Curator of Tom Brown’s School Museum in Uffington take you on an informative journey.
Wiltshire’s stable of equine chalk hill-figures arguably represent the county’s most prominent set of monuments. They have largely persisted in the landscape due to a strong symbiotic relationship between a chalk horse and its local community. Popular histories of Wiltshire’s chalk horses date to some 150 years ago and continue to inform how we think about them. Yet the question of why this unique collection of current and lost chalk horses were corralled within a small area of Wiltshire continues to evade us. In light of recent research and survey work this talk seeks to assess the validity of stories attached to three of Wiltshire’s chalk horses to suggest a richer understanding of these enigmatic hill-figures.
